WOS Field Trip and Picnic
Saturday Sept 9, 2023
Location: Dune Peninsula Park, Tacoma, WA
Join Ed Pullen, Jody Hess and hopefully lots of WOS members at Dune Peninsula Park on the Tacoma waterfront Saturday September 9th. This is different from most field trips in that we will set up spotting scopes at the point and do a seawatch from 8 AM until about noon. If the seawatching is slow, we can take a walk along the Wilson Way trail. Birding can vary from very exciting to very slow, but hoped-for species include Parasitic Jaeger, Rhinoceros Auklet, gulls, possible terns, possible other seabirds that wander into the south Sound, and migrating passerines. This is the #1 eBird hotspot in Pierce County in large part due to uncommon vagrants being found here not infrequently.
We didn’t get to have our “annual” conference this year and the hope is that lots of WOS members will take advantage of the opportunity to gather for some birding and for a picnic on the beautiful park grounds about midday. Bring whatever you want to eat and drink at the picnic, remembering that grills are not allowed, and that you cannot drive stakes into the lawn. Otherwise bring lawn chairs, eating utinsils, shade devices if desired, along with whatever food and drinks you want. There are a few picnic tables, but mostly this will be on a lawn.
Parking can be tight later in the day, so carpooling would help.
Not necessary, but letting Ed know who is coming may help with planning. edp@wos.org Come one-come all!
