SUMMARY:Kim Adelson on Birds and Dinosaurs
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kim Adelson will be the featured speaker. Her subject will be The Birds who Lived with (Other) Dinosaurs: Part 2 of “The Dinosaurs Amongst Us” talk.\nThis talk is a continuation of Kim’s presentation to WOS last February of “The Dinosaurs Amongst Us”. Kim promises you\nwon’t get lost if you missed the first talk. (However\, note that a recording of that talk is available on the WOS YouTube\nchannel.) \nThe focus of this talk will be on the birds who lived during the age of dinosaurs. Although most people imagine that birds\nfirst appeared as the “classic” dinosaurs were dying off\, this is not true. Birds – true birds\, but significantly different from\ntoday’s species – first appeared about 160 million years ago and co-existed with non-avian dinosaurs for almost 100 million\nyears. Kim will discuss the features that characterized the very first birds and talk about the three main types of birds that\ndominated the landscape in the latter half of the dinosaur era. She will also try to give us a sense of the diversity of early\nbirds and the breadth of the ecological niches they filled. Finally\, she will talk about which modern\, extant orders of birds\nwere alive back then\, walking alongside other dinosaurs. You won’t want to miss this talk. \nThis presentation will be online only. Information about how to watch the talk using the GoToMeeting app will be provided at least one week before the meeting at https://wos.org/monthly-meetings/ \nThe meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. but you are invited to sign on ahead of time beginning at 7:15 p.m. And please always mute your microphone and turn your camera off before you enter a meeting.

Day before or day of the trip call my cell at 509-540-5084\nDate: Sunday September 26\, 2021\nMeeting time & place: Meet at 7 am at Bassett Park\, Washtucna.\nMax # of Participants: 10\nTrip Description: We will be visiting Washtucna\, Palouse Falls SP\, and Lyons Ferry SP. Depending on time\, and how the birding is we may go down to Windust and the Lower Monumental Dam area. We aim to be back in Washtucna before 5pm or if we do not car pool you can leave on your own terms. Pack a lunch. We will walking on mostly flat areas in parks\, tennis/hiking shoes will be fine. Rain and especially wind is a possibility so bring clothes with that in mind. These areas are very well known migrant traps so the hope here is to find some rarities\, whether it be rare sparrows\, a vagrant warbler or even a lost pelagic species. This is the later end for a lot things\, but there is still a strong potential for something unusual to show up. We will be in Franklin and Adams\, with migration going on this would be a great time to pick up a few new ones for these counties

SUMMARY:Puget Sound Bird Fest
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated Local Author and Naturalist to Kick off Puget Sound Bird Fest17th annual Keynote presentation offers a rare look at a rare bird \n(Edmonds – WA) Award-winning author Maria Mudd Ruth has been selected as the 2021 Keynote presenter for\nthe 17 th annual Puget Sound Bird Fest taking place September 11-12\, 2021. Maria will kick off the festivities on\nSaturday morning at 10:00am with her presentation ‘The Not-so Awkward Auks’. Other presentations and\nactivities will follow throughout the weekend. \nThe Salish Sea is home to a fascinating family of diving seabirds known as auks\, or alcids. Though often\ndescribed as “awkward” or “clumsy” in field guides\, these web-footed birds are amazingly well adapted to life in\nthe air\, on land\, and especially at sea. Maria will talk about two of her favorite auks—the shy\, cryptic\, secretive\,\ntree-nesting Marbled Murrelet and its clownish\, extroverted\, burrow-nesting cousin\, the Pigeon Guillemot. \n“Auks are an exciting family of birds and there are a surprising number of them\, including puffins\, that can be\nfound in the Salish Sea” said Jennifer Leach\, coordinator of the annual event. \nMaria is the author of more than a dozen books on natural history topics for children and adults\, including Rare\nBird: Pursuing the Mystery of the Marbled Murrelet\, a narrative natural history of an endearing and endangered\nseabird. Her most recent book of non-fiction\, A Sideways Look at Cloud\, was awarded the Nautilus Silver Medal\nin 2017. \nOther weekend activities include presentations throughout the day on Saturday\, and traditional favorites such\nas the Kid’s Corner and the People’s Choice Photography Contest – be sure to vote for your favorite! Guided\ntours of local birding hotspots will be offered throughout the weekend by the Pilchuck Audubon Society\, which\nalso plans to host a native plant sale. \nThe Bird Fest Planning Committee is hard at work planning the 2021 event and will continue to update the Bird\nFest website as the festival schedule develops. Please note that due to uncertainties associated with the COVID-\n19 pandemic\, indoor activities such as presentations and workshops may be delivered online\, while field\nactivities will be offered in person with limited group sizes. \nAuks of Puget Sound is the theme of this year’s Poster Art Contest\, and artists are reminded to submit entries of\noriginal artwork through June 25. \nFor the latest information\, please visit http://www.pugetsoundbirdfest.com/ or email\nJennifer.leach@edmondswa.gov. SUMMARY:FULL: Southern Pend Oreille County with Jon Isacoff
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Yokes Parking lot in Mead\, Washington at 6 am. Trip is limited to 12 vaccinated participants and is now full.\nFrom Mead\, we will drive approximately 45 minutes to famous Calispell Lake\, the top eBird hotspot in Northeastern WA. This shallow lake is encircled by 10 miles of excellent birdable roads\, which can produce over 90 species in a morning under ideal conditions. An incredible 17 species of ducks breed at Calispell Lake as well as all nine of the regular Eastern WA breeding warblers. Specialty birds found at Calispell Lake include: Black Swift (rare)\, Black Tern\, American Bittern\, Least Flycatcher\, Bobolink\, Northern Waterthrush\, and American Redstart. Washington’s 12th record of Eastern Phoebe was recorded at Calispell Lake in 2013. \nFrom Calispell lake\, we will proceed a short distance to Cusick Wetlands\, Kalispell Reservation Dike Road\, and Flying Goose Ranch\, covering both banks of the Pend Oreille River. These are great spots to pick up any breeding specialties missed at Calispell Lake and to look for surprises. Though not to be expected\, various rarities have shown up at these locations in the past\, including Black Swift\, Sabine’s Gull\, Franklin’s Gull\, Clay-colored Sparrow\, and Washington’s 5th record of Alder Flycatcher in 2018. The Kalispell Reservation is also the only regular breeding location for Lewis’s Woodpecker in Pend Oreille County. \nParticipants should be prepared with a full tank of gas\, lunch\, water and snacks. Also check the forecast and dress accordingly; the weather can be highly variable in this area\, even in June\, ranging from sunny and high 70s to snow/hail showers and 30s. A scope is highly recommended if available. We will follow CDC Phase 3 regulations\, which include masks required indoors and in cars\, windows cracked\, and 6’ distance in other conditions.  \nFor questions or to sign up\, please contact Jon Isacoff at isacoff@gonzaga.edu.

SUMMARY:FULL: Yakima County with Scott Downes
DESCRIPTION:Yakima County Weekend. May 15-16. The birding will start on Saturday at White Pass and we’ll spend the rest of Saturday covering the varied habitats of the east slope of The Cascades where an amazing variety of birds\, including up to 10 species of woodpecker can be encountered! We’ll finish Saturday covering the Wenas Creek drainage before ending in Yakima. Sunday will have an early start to beat the heat and will head into the lower Yakima Valley covering areas like Toppenish NWR and Sunnyside Wildlife Area. The Lower Yakima Valley is often alive with birds of the marsh during May. The trip will end in early afternoon to allow time for people to travel home and beat at least some of the heat. The weekend trip should be a great exposure to the breeding birds of Yakima County and at least 120 species are expected over the weekend\, likely more. \n Participants should be prepared with lunch\, water and snacks both days as we’ll be birding on the run. A scope will be helpful if you have it. Drivers should have the Discover Pass and Northwest Forest Pass. Weather can vary from needing layers at White Pass to bug spray and sunscreen in the Lower Valley. Expect to meet both days in Yakima at 6:00 am. Although the situation around COVID is evolving\, please follow the current CDC recommendations\, including wearing face masks\, keeping 6 feet of social distance\, etc. to limit potential exposure. Be prepared to drive on your own or with members of your own household. At your own risk and discretion\, you may drive with others if all are vaccinated\, face masks are worn\, and it’s mutually agreed by the riders. \n For questions or to sign up\, contact Scott Downes at downess@charter.net NOTE: This trip is full.

SUMMARY:Kim Adelson: Dinosaurs Amongst Us
DESCRIPTION:Virtually all paleontologists agree that birds evolved from dinosaurs\, and most even go so far as to claim that birds are\, in fact\, living dinosaurs. Come learn about the remarkable similarities between birds and the creatures they evolved from. We guarantee that you will not only be surprised as to how dinosaur-like birds are\, but also how very bird-like dinosaurs were. You will never think about T. rex in the same way again! \nKim Adelson was a professor of psychology for almost 30 years. Before she switched fields so as to better study behavioral evolution\, she earned a master’s degree in evolutionary biology. Paleontology has been one of her avocations since she was a child. She is on the Board of the Black Hills Audubon Society and frequently gives presentations for that group.

SUMMARY:David Fraser. "Things I learned birding for 31 years with Tom Briggs: a man I never met"
DESCRIPTION:Meeting online only. Get details on the Monthly Meetings page.\nDavid Fraser is a biologist\, birder and sketcher who\, 30 years ago\, set off on a journey when an unknown birder’s notes came into his possession. These near daily bird observations which commenced in 1959 have proved to be key mileposts to recognizing changes in the avifauna of Vancouver Island where breeding records of Horned Larks\, nesting locations for Western Bluebirds and records of other species are now rare or no longer found. In his presentation\, Fraser demonstrates how entry of historic data such as these into eBird\, can document significant changes in birdlife.
