SUMMARY:Seattle’s Expanding Cooper’s Hawk Population
DESCRIPTION:WOS Monthly Meeting\, May 2\, Monday\, 7:30 pm\, Ed Deal to present a 10-Year Retrospective on Seattle’s Expanding Urban Cooper’s Hawk Population\nThe Washington Ornithological Society is delighted to invite you to our May Monthly Meeting when Ed Deal will share what he and a group of volunteers in the Seattle Cooper’s Hawk Project have learned about these common but elusive raptors through 10 years of monitoring them in Seattle. \nThirty years ago Cooper’s Hawks began colonizing urban and suburban landscapes throughout the US\, developing a tolerance for living in proximity to humans. The Seattle Cooper’s Hawk Project is one of several studies in large US cities and the only all-volunteer\, community science project. Since 2012 the group has monitored the local Cooper’s Hawk population nesting density and annual nest productivity. \nIn 1991 Ed was introduced to the fascinating world of raptors when he signed up for a Hawk ID class with Bud Anderson. It proved to be a mid-life-changing event\, leading to hawk banding in WA state and beyond; 17 years of volunteering on the Falcon Research Group’s study of nesting Peregrine Falcons in the San Juan Islands; 28 years of monitoring & banding nesting Peregrines in the Seattle area; and\, of course\, his work monitoring Seattle’s Cooper’s Hawks. \nWhen? Monday\, May 2\, 7:30 pm (sign-in begins at 7:15 pm) \nWOS Monthly Meetings remain open to all as we continue to welcome the wider birding community to join us online.\n \nFor login information\, go to http://wos.org/about-wos/monthly-meetings/.  While there\, if you are not yet a member of WOS\, I hope you will consider becoming one.\n \nPlease join us! \nVicki King\nWOS Program Coordinator

SUMMARY:Jeff Antonelis-Lapp on Special Birds of Mt. Rainier
DESCRIPTION:The Washington Ornithological Society (WOS) invites you to join us on April 4 when Evergreen State College Emeritus Professor Jeff Antonelis-Lapp will present Special Birds of Mt. Rainier. \nTo most birders\, Mount Rainier National Park is a mecca for subalpine and alpine birds that include Canada (Gray) Jay\,\nClark’s Nutcracker\, Mountain Bluebird\, and highly sought-after specialties that include Boreal Owl\, White-tailed Ptarmigan\,\nand Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch. But did you know that it and its neighboring watersheds host Northern Spotted Owl\, Marbled\nMurrelet\, and Streaked Horned Lark\, all protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act? Jeff will share the status of\nthese key species based on Tahoma and Its People\, the natural history of Mount Rainier that he wrote and the Washington\nState University Press published. \nJeff’s connection to Mt. Rainier is long and deep. In addition to extensive research he conducted for his book\, Jeff worked\ntwo summers at “the Mountain” after graduating from college. He has summited it\, hiked all of its mapped trails\, and\ncompleted the 93-mile Wonderland Trail five times. \nWhen? Monday\, April 4\, 7:30 pm via Zoom (Sign-in begins at 7:15 pm)\, \nWOS Monthly Meetings remain open to all as we continue to welcome the wider birding community to join us online. \nFor login information\, go to http://wos.org/about-wos/monthly-meetings/. SUMMARY:Cornell Lab’s Birds of the World and the Birder's Dashboard for Washington
DESCRIPTION:The Washington Ornithological Society (WOS) warmly invites you to join us on Feb. 7 when we’ll learn about two powerful online birding resources: Cornell Lab’s Birds of the World and the Birder’s Dashboard for Washington.\nWashington Ornithological Society members now enjoy free access to Birds of the World\, the world’s most comprehensive\nornithology resource. Laura Kammermeier\, our guest speaker from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, will show how this\nauthoritative but accessible resource can help deepen our understanding of birds’ life histories\, learn families and\nsubspecies\, examine songs\, calls and identification features\, and find updated range maps. Laura will give us a tour of this\nimpressively dynamic resource and demonstrate some of its lesser-known features. \nOur second speaker will be WOS member and Zella M. Schultz Award recipient\, Randy Robinson. Randy created the\nBirder’s Dashboard for Washington that went live in 2015. It is based on sightings submitted to eBird from anywhere in Washington\nState and it makes those sightings available within a few hours. The sightings can also be searched using a variety of useful\nfilters. Please join us and learn how to take full advantage of this wonderful\, user-friendly resource. \nWhat: Cornell Lab’s Birds of the World and the Washington Dashboard\nWhen: Monday\, February 7\, 7:00 pm via Zoom (Sign-in begins at 6:45 pm) \nWOS Monthly Meetings remain open to all as we continue to welcome the wider birding community to join us online. \nFor login information\, go to http://wos.org/about-wos/monthly-meetings/. SUMMARY:FULL: Yakima County Weekend with Leader Scott Downes
DESCRIPTION:THIS TRIP IS FULL. The birding will start on Saturday at White Pass and spend the rest of Saturday covering the varied habitats of the east slope of the cascades where an amazing variety of birds\, including up to 10 species of woodpecker can be encountered! We’ll finish Saturday covering the Wenas Creek drainage before ending in Yakima. Sunday will have an early start to beat the heat and will head into the lower Yakima Valley covering areas like Toppenish NWR\, Sunnyside Wildlife Area and Fort Simcoe. The Lower Yakima Valley is often alive with birds of the marsh during May. The trip will end in early afternoon to allow time for people to travel home and beat at least some of the heat. The weekend trip should be a great exposure to the breeding birds of Yakima County and at least 120 species are expected over the weekend\, likely more.\nParticipants should be prepared with lunch\, water and snacks both days as we’ll be birding on the run. A scope will be helpful if you have it. Drivers should have the Discover Pass and ideally a Northwest Forest Pass. Weather can vary from needing layers at White Pass to bug spray and sunscreen in the Lower Valley. Expect to meet both days in Yakima at dawn or just before. Trip will be limited to 9 participants. For questions or to sign up\, contact Scott Downes at downess@charter.net.

SUMMARY:Planting with a Purpose: To Bring Birds Back
DESCRIPTION:WOS’s January 3\, 2022 Meeting: Planting with a Purpose: To Bring Birds Back\nHow to Transform Our Yards into Bird-Friendly Habitat \nRecent headlines have highlighted serious declines in the numbers of birds and of insects\, including insects that pollinate our food and insects that are primary food sources for many birds. However\, as our presenters at WOS’ Jan. 3 Monthly Meeting program will show\, we are not doomed to stand by\, helplessly\, and watch these worrisome trends continue. We can take actions to turn them around. \nOur first speaker will be Professor Doug Tallamy\, an entomologist and author of the NY Times best-seller\, Nature’s Best Hope\, a New Approach to Conservation that Starts in Your Yard (2019). Speaking in a recorded video\, Tallamy will describe specific steps we can take to create habitats in our yards where birds\, insects and other wildlife thrive. Chief among these steps is planting native plants\, particularly native “keystone plants” because the latter support 90% of the caterpillar species\, mostly moths\, that enable our terrestrial birds to reproduce. \nFollowing Tallamy’s presentation will be moth enthusiast\, David Droppers\, who will explain why moths are key\, not those pretty butterflies! He will address important questions such as 1) what are the keystone plants in Washington; 2) what are the challenges to selecting plants in the Pacific Northwest; and 3) how should we go about choosing plants. David will guide us through these plant choices while also sharing the natural history of moths. \nOur third presenter will be WOS member Neil Zimmerman who will show photos of the beautiful\, wildlife-friendly garden that he and his wife Carleen have created and he will share the principles that have guided them in creating and maintaining their garden.

SUMMARY:Kim Adelson on Birds and Dinosaurs
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kim Adelson will be the featured speaker. Her subject will be The Birds who Lived with (Other) Dinosaurs: Part 2 of “The Dinosaurs Amongst Us” talk.\nThis talk is a continuation of Kim’s presentation to WOS last February of “The Dinosaurs Amongst Us”. Kim promises you\nwon’t get lost if you missed the first talk. (However\, note that a recording of that talk is available on the WOS YouTube\nchannel.) \nThe focus of this talk will be on the birds who lived during the age of dinosaurs. Although most people imagine that birds\nfirst appeared as the “classic” dinosaurs were dying off\, this is not true. Birds – true birds\, but significantly different from\ntoday’s species – first appeared about 160 million years ago and co-existed with non-avian dinosaurs for almost 100 million\nyears. Kim will discuss the features that characterized the very first birds and talk about the three main types of birds that\ndominated the landscape in the latter half of the dinosaur era. She will also try to give us a sense of the diversity of early\nbirds and the breadth of the ecological niches they filled. Finally\, she will talk about which modern\, extant orders of birds\nwere alive back then\, walking alongside other dinosaurs. You won’t want to miss this talk. \nThis presentation will be online only. Information about how to watch the talk using the GoToMeeting app will be provided at least one week before the meeting at https://wos.org/monthly-meetings/ \nThe meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. but you are invited to sign on ahead of time beginning at 7:15 p.m. And please always mute your microphone and turn your camera off before you enter a meeting.

DESCRIPTION:Trip Title: Columbia Basin Migrant TrapsTrip Leader: RJ Baltierra\nContact me at Richard.baltierra@outlook.com with questions or to sign up. Day before or day of the trip call my cell at 509-540-5084\nDate: Sunday September 26\, 2021\nMeeting time & place: Meet at 7 am at Bassett Park\, Washtucna.\nMax # of Participants: 10\nTrip Description: We will be visiting Washtucna\, Palouse Falls SP\, and Lyons Ferry SP. Depending on time\, and how the birding is we may go down to Windust and the Lower Monumental Dam area. We aim to be back in Washtucna before 5pm or if we do not car pool you can leave on your own terms. Pack a lunch. We will walking on mostly flat areas in parks\, tennis/hiking shoes will be fine. Rain and especially wind is a possibility so bring clothes with that in mind. These areas are very well known migrant traps so the hope here is to find some rarities\, whether it be rare sparrows\, a vagrant warbler or even a lost pelagic species. This is the later end for a lot things\, but there is still a strong potential for something unusual to show up. We will be in Franklin and Adams\, with migration going on this would be a great time to pick up a few new ones for these counties

Though often\ndescribed as “awkward” or “clumsy” in field guides\, these web-footed birds are amazingly well adapted to life in\nthe air\, on land\, and especially at sea. Maria will talk about two of her favorite auks—the shy\, cryptic\, secretive\,\ntree-nesting Marbled Murrelet and its clownish\, extroverted\, burrow-nesting cousin\, the Pigeon Guillemot. \n“Auks are an exciting family of birds and there are a surprising number of them\, including puffins\, that can be\nfound in the Salish Sea” said Jennifer Leach\, coordinator of the annual event. \nMaria is the author of more than a dozen books on natural history topics for children and adults\, including Rare\nBird: Pursuing the Mystery of the Marbled Murrelet\, a narrative natural history of an endearing and endangered\nseabird. Her most recent book of non-fiction\, A Sideways Look at Cloud\, was awarded the Nautilus Silver Medal\nin 2017. \nOther weekend activities include presentations throughout the day on Saturday\, and traditional favorites such\nas the Kid’s Corner and the People’s Choice Photography Contest – be sure to vote for your favorite! Guided\ntours of local birding hotspots will be offered throughout the weekend by the Pilchuck Audubon Society\, which\nalso plans to host a native plant sale. \nThe Bird Fest Planning Committee is hard at work planning the 2021 event and will continue to update the Bird\nFest website as the festival schedule develops. Please note that due to uncertainties associated with the COVID-\n19 pandemic\, indoor activities such as presentations and workshops may be delivered online\, while field\nactivities will be offered in person with limited group sizes. \nAuks of Puget Sound is the theme of this year’s Poster Art Contest\, and artists are reminded to submit entries of\noriginal artwork through June 25. \nFor the latest information\, please visit http://www.pugetsoundbirdfest.com/ or email\nJennifer.leach@edmondswa.gov.
