SUMMARY:Martha Jordan: Washington’s White Birds of Winter - Swans and Snow Geese
DESCRIPTION:Martha Jordan will speak on Washington’s White Birds of Winter – Swans and Snow Geese\nSince the late 1970s\, well-known swan biologist Martha Jordan has contributed enormously to understanding the life history of swans and Snow Geese\, their biology and what influences their distribution across our state and the Pacific flyway. She wrote the state’s first Trumpeter Swan management plan in 1985\, and is a member of Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Waterfowl Advisory Group. \nThese birds face a changing landscape in migration and on their wintering grounds\, and are confronted by habitat issues\, avian influenza\, swan lead poisoning and more. Martha will detail these challenges to our White Birds of Winter\, and what is needed to ensure their future. \nConsult the Monthly Meetings page for details on how to view the meeting by Zoom.

SUMMARY:Madilyn Odiorne on "Bird Use of a Prairie Restoration Site in Eastern Washington"
DESCRIPTION:Speaker Madilyn Odiorne will present on the topic of “Bird Use of a Prairie Restoration Site in Eastern Washington.” This is an online-only event over Zoom. For details on connecting to the meeting\, visit the Monthly Meetings page a week or two before the meeting.\nPrairies and other grassland ecosystems are in decline worldwide due to factors such as agriculture\, climate change and fossil fuel extraction. Among the organisms affected are avian grassland groups\, shown to have declined 50% since the 1960s. As birds are widely recognized to be important indicators of ecosystem health\, this project aims to estimate baseline abundance and diversity of birds at two contrasting sites: an intact prairie remnant (Magnuson Butte) and a restoration site on the Eastern Washington University (EWU) campus. It is hoped that results will inform future efforts and shed light on the benefits of restoring native grasslands locally and worldwide.

SUMMARY:Wild Stories from the History of Bird Migration Research with Speaker Rebecca Heisman
DESCRIPTION:By Zoom Only. We’ve all heard amazing facts about bird migration—the long distances traveled\, the ways they navigate\, etc. But did you ever wonder how this has all been figured out? Our speaker\, Rebecca Heisman\, became fascinated with the varied and creative techniques that have been used to investigate bird migration\, and has recently published her first book\, Flight Paths: How a Passionate and Quirky Group of Pioneering Scientists Solved the Mystery of Bird Migration. In her talk for WOS\, Rebecca\, who lives in Walla Walla\, will share intriguing stories from the history of bird migration research and discuss why understanding migration is so crucial for bird conservation.

SUMMARY:WOS Field Trip and Picnic at Dune Peninsula Park in Tacoma
DESCRIPTION:WOS Field Trip and Picnic\nSaturday Sept 9\, 2023 \nLocation: Dune Peninsula Park\, Tacoma\, WA \nJoin Ed Pullen\, Jody Hess and hopefully lots of WOS members at Dune Peninsula Park on the Tacoma waterfront Saturday September 9th. This is different from most field trips in that we will set up spotting scopes at the point and do a seawatch from 8 AM until about noon. If the seawatching is slow\, we can take a walk along the Wilson Way trail. Birding can vary from very exciting to very slow\, but hoped-for species include Parasitic Jaeger\, Rhinoceros Auklet\, gulls\, possible terns\, possible other seabirds that wander into the south Sound\, and migrating passerines. This is the #1 eBird hotspot in Pierce County in large part due to uncommon vagrants being found here not infrequently. \nWe didn’t get to have our “annual” conference this year and the hope is that lots of WOS members will take advantage of the opportunity to gather for some birding and for a picnic on the beautiful park grounds about midday. Bring whatever you want to eat and drink at the picnic\, remembering that grills are not allowed\, and that you cannot drive stakes into the lawn. Otherwise bring lawn chairs\, eating utinsils\, shade devices if desired\, along with whatever food and drinks you want. There are a few picnic tables\, but mostly this will be on a lawn. \nParking can be tight later in the day\, so carpooling would help. \nNot necessary\, but letting Ed know who is coming may help with planning. edp@wos.org Come one-come all!

SUMMARY:Jason Fidorra will present ”Washington's Ferruginous Hawks: Status and Ecology”
DESCRIPTION:Jason Fidorra will present ”Washington’s Ferruginous Hawks: Status and Ecology” Online only via Zoom.\nThe Ferruginous Hawk\, Buteo regalis\, is North America’s largest hawk\, with populations in decline over most of its range. Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Staff and volunteers monitor over 275 historic breeding sites of this raptor: based upon their state-wide surveys\, the Ferruginous Hawk was up-listed in 2021 to an endangered species in Washington. In this talk\, Jason Fidorra will discuss the ecology\, threats\, survey results\, and future of the Ferruginous Hawk in Washington. \nJason has worked on bird research and conservation projects across North America and enjoys birding and guiding in tropical countries. He is a Wildlife Biologist for the WDFW in the Tri-Cities working on the front lines of shrub-steppe conservation which is critical habitat for many of Washington’s species of greatest concern. He surveys a variety of wildlife from elk to monarchs and contributes to research on Burrowing Owls\, raptors and game birds.

SUMMARY:Cindy Easterson: “Conversations with Secretive Birds and What We’ve Learned”
DESCRIPTION:Secretive birds intrigue us\, but their elusive nature makes them difficult to study\, so there is remarkably little known about the biology of many wetland birds. Puget Sound Bird Observatory (PSBO) has been studying birds across our regional wetlands for the past six years to assess population trends of five under-detected\, wetland species: American Bittern\, Sora\, Virginia Rail\, Green Heron and Pied-billed Grebe.\nOur presenter\, Cindy Easterson\, manages PSBO’s Regional Wetland Secretive Bird Monitoring project\, in addition to providing oversight for a wide variety of other avian monitoring projects. She will explain how you can participate in this work. \nShe holds an integrated Bachelor of Arts and Science Degree with a focus on Wetland Science from the University of Washington and has served on the Board of PSBO since 2010. \nThe meeting will be conducted via Zoom. Please go to http://wos.org/about-wos/monthly-meetings/ for instructions on participation and to get the Zoom link. Sign-in will begin at 7:15 pm. \nThis meeting is open to all as WOS invites everyone in the wider birding community to attend. \nIf you are not yet a member\, I hope you will consider becoming one at http://wos.org/about-wos/membership/. \nPlease join us! \nVicki King\nWOS Program Coordinator
