SUMMARY:Western Field Ornithologists 50th Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate 50 years of WFO’s Annual Conference in 2026 by joining us in Ashland\, Oregon this fall!\nIn partnership with Klamath Bird Observatory and the Oregon Birding Association\, WFO is excited to commemorate this golden milestone in Ashland\, Oregon\, September 17– 20\, 2026. Our planning committee is hard at work organizing expert-led field trips and a full schedule of engaging science sessions\, skills workshops and panels\, and not-to-be missed events like the Sound ID Challenge. \nJaime Stephens\, Director of Conservation at Klamath Bird Observatory\, will deliver the keynote presentation. \nJaime brings together forest ecology\, avian science\, and applied conservation to inform real-world decision-making for birds and habitats of the Pacific Northwest. Her work centers on translating long-term monitoring and ecological research into conservation strategies that are practical\, inclusive\, and grounded in collaboration. She works closely with agencies\, Tribes\, conservation organizations\, and landowners\, to co-produce solutions that benefit birds while addressing land-use and social constraints. \nConference registration is now open and more information is available on the WFO website: 2026 WFO Conference- Ashland

SUMMARY:Puget Sound Bird Fest
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of birds and nature\, Puget Sound Bird Fest features two days of speakers\, guided walks\, field trips\, exhibits\, andeducational activities for all ages. Most Bird Fest activities are free and open to the public\, with some activities\nrequiring a small fee and/or pre-registration. \nThe Puget Sound Bird Fest was initially held in spring to celebrate International Migratory Bird Day. After\ngrowing for several years\, it was moved to fall to avoid competition with other birding festivals around the\nregion. Last year\, festival planners decided to move it back to spring to better coincide with the peak season for\nbird watching. \n“We’re really excited about moving Bird Fest to the spring\,” said Brian Zinke\, Executive Director of the Pilchuck\nAudubon Society\, who has partnered with the City to put on the event since it began. “Spring is a time of\nrejuvenation\, a time when we come out of the doldrums of the long Northwest winter\, and what better way to\ncelebrate that than by welcoming back our splendid migratory birds.” \nThis year’s event will kick off early Saturday morning\, June 1st with guided walks offered by the Pilchuck\nAudubon Society\, followed by a presentation by wildlife biologist Gregory Green at 10am in the Edmonds Plaza\nRoom. \nGreen’s presentation The Ecology of Hummingbirds from Ecuador to Washington will explore the unique\necology of hummingbirds and share the results of his research on the northward expansion of Anna’s\nhummingbirds over the past 75 years. Other presentations will follow throughout the day. \nAlso on Saturday\, families can enjoy a special Bird Fest Family Storytime at the Edmonds Library starting at\n10am\, then head next door to the Kids Corner in the Exhibits Hall in the Frances Anderson Center gym. Booths\nstaffed by representatives from regional conservation organizations\, artists\, scientists\, and select vendors will\nbe open until 4pm. Be sure to stop by the Pilchuck Audubon Society Photo Contest booth to vote for your\nfavorite.Additional field activities will be hosted on Sunday\, June 2nd\, including guided walks\, a boat cruise to Protection\nIsland\, a native plant sale\, and tours of the Edmonds Wildlife Habitat Native Plant Demonstration Garden by the\nEdmonds Stewards. \nBird Fest is located in beautiful downtown Edmonds where guests can enjoy a rich array of shops\, galleries\,\nrestaurants\, cafes and bistros that cater to arts and festivals. Many acclaimed eateries in the center of town and\nalong the beachfront are within easy walking distance of the Bird Fest venue.\nThe Bird Fest Planning Committee is hard at work planning the 2024 event and plans to post the full festival\nschedule by April 15th. SUMMARY:Puget Sound Bird Fest
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated Local Author and Naturalist to Kick off Puget Sound Bird Fest17th annual Keynote presentation offers a rare look at a rare bird \n(Edmonds – WA) Award-winning author Maria Mudd Ruth has been selected as the 2021 Keynote presenter for\nthe 17 th annual Puget Sound Bird Fest taking place September 11-12\, 2021. Maria will kick off the festivities on\nSaturday morning at 10:00am with her presentation ‘The Not-so Awkward Auks’. Other presentations and\nactivities will follow throughout the weekend. \nThe Salish Sea is home to a fascinating family of diving seabirds known as auks\, or alcids. Though often\ndescribed as “awkward” or “clumsy” in field guides\, these web-footed birds are amazingly well adapted to life in\nthe air\, on land\, and especially at sea. Maria will talk about two of her favorite auks—the shy\, cryptic\, secretive\,\ntree-nesting Marbled Murrelet and its clownish\, extroverted\, burrow-nesting cousin\, the Pigeon Guillemot. \n“Auks are an exciting family of birds and there are a surprising number of them\, including puffins\, that can be\nfound in the Salish Sea” said Jennifer Leach\, coordinator of the annual event. \nMaria is the author of more than a dozen books on natural history topics for children and adults\, including Rare\nBird: Pursuing the Mystery of the Marbled Murrelet\, a narrative natural history of an endearing and endangered\nseabird. Her most recent book of non-fiction\, A Sideways Look at Cloud\, was awarded the Nautilus Silver Medal\nin 2017. \nOther weekend activities include presentations throughout the day on Saturday\, and traditional favorites such\nas the Kid’s Corner and the People’s Choice Photography Contest – be sure to vote for your favorite! Guided\ntours of local birding hotspots will be offered throughout the weekend by the Pilchuck Audubon Society\, which\nalso plans to host a native plant sale. \nThe Bird Fest Planning Committee is hard at work planning the 2021 event and will continue to update the Bird\nFest website as the festival schedule develops. Please note that due to uncertainties associated with the COVID-\n19 pandemic\, indoor activities such as presentations and workshops may be delivered online\, while field\nactivities will be offered in person with limited group sizes. \nAuks of Puget Sound is the theme of this year’s Poster Art Contest\, and artists are reminded to submit entries of\noriginal artwork through June 25. \nFor the latest information\, please visit http://www.pugetsoundbirdfest.com/ or email\nJennifer.leach@edmondswa.gov.
