Washington Ornithological Society: Volunteer

Volunteer with WOS - Current Opportunities

Any person interested in the recreational, educational, or scientific aspects of field ornithologymay become a member and volunteer for WOS. You may be looking for ways to get more involved with our wonderful organization! If so, the board welcomes your interest. From envelope-stuffing to assisting a key organizational endeavor, please feel free to get involved to whatever extent is comfortable for you. Come be a part of what keeps WOS great!

Membership Chair

Not time-consuming. Very detail-oriented. Can be done from any location in the state.

We are looking for a member who would like to learn to navigate the Membership Chair position and assume the job January 1, 2009. The current Chair will work with our new volunteer until the end of 2008 to acquaint him or her with the position and its responsibilities. This position involves email communication with members with regard to membership issues, and short Board reports detailing the current membership numbers. It requires a commitment of about five hours every other month updating the membership database in Excel and running the files for the newsletter labels and it can all be accomplished from any location in the state. It is not time-consuming, but is very detail-oriented and requires timely responses to members and getting the files run by the deadlines for each newsletter and postcard reminder mailing. For more information, please contact Susan Fallat.

WOS Conference Committee

The Board is looking for members who would like to be involved with putting on the annual conference. The over-all planning of the event includes research and recommendations of possible sites, arranging for facilities and service providers, managing registration, and assisting the Treasurer with detailed accounts of all expenses and revenues. This committee will be overseen by the Board, to which it reports. A fair understanding of the birds of Washington and their distribution is helpful, but not required. Contact Gene Hunn if interested.

Staff the WOS Table at Birding Festivals

This is an enjoyable service that only requires a few hours and puts you right into fun and educational bird activities across the state. A love of birds and of WOS, plus a willingness to answer questions or find a resource for people’s questions over two-four hour time slots are all that is required.  Partners can ‘spell’ each other and we can take several teams per day at the Othello Sandhill Crane Festival and other birding festivals and fairs across the state (Grays Harbor, Leavenworth, etc).  It can be surprising who you will meet and what great local birding you find out about while working the WOS booth.  Please contact Gene Hunn.
