Washington Field Notes

August to September 2015

Compiled by Ryan Merrill

Birds in bold or capital letters represent birds on the state review list which requires documentation to be submitted to the Washington Bird Records Committee.

A hatch year Short-tailed Albatross found in Clallam was brought into rehab but did not survive.  Washington’s 8th & 9th Great Shearwaters came from offshore Grays Harbor and Clallam.  A Manx Shearwater north of Port Angeles was a very rare sighting for the Strait of Juan de Fuca.  A flock of 15 Fork-tailed Storm-Petrels in San Juan followed an unusual August windstorm.  Brown Boobies invaded with a minimum of three individuals in Kitsap, Grays Harbor, Pacific, and Snohomish, adding to about eleven prior records.  A Brown Pelican in Renton in late September was a surprising sight away from saltwater.

Twenty Broad-winged Hawks from five counties included ten in a day in late Sep in Chelan.  Rare fall westside Swainson’s Hawks were in Kitsap and Whatcom in early and mid September.  The state’s 5th Lesser Sand-Plover spent a week at Ocean Shores in August.  A Snowy Plover in Clallam in early September was north of its usual range.  A Red-necked Stint on Clallam’s outer coast in early August was the state’s 7th.  A Sharp-tailed Sandpiper in Benton and a Ruff in Walla Walla in late September were both less than annual finds on the eastside.  The state’s 11th Red-legged Kittiwake was a cooperative adult at Neah Bay in early September.  The adult Slaty-backed Gull returned to Pierce by late August.  A rare eastside Arctic Tern was in Grant in mid September.  A Forster’s Tern in coastal Jefferson in early September was the first for the county, while another westside bird was in Clark where less unexpected.  Elegant Tern numbers peaked with a couple of counts over 200 in Pacific.  Other interesting records included several up the Columbia River in Wahkiakum and a group at Point No Point.  Three Long-tailed Jaegers away from the outer coast included an adult migrating over a suburban yard in King.  A Guadalupe Murrelet off Westport in early August was the first in the state since 2003 and adds to 3-4 previous records.

Less than annual on the westside were 1-2 adult male Black-chinned Hummingbirds in the Skagit lowlands in early September.  At least 27 Lewis’s Woodpeckers passed through western WA when they are barely detected annually.  Stray woodpeckers included an Acorn Woodpecker in Clark in late September and Snohomish’s first Williamson’s Sapsucker in late August.  The Eastern Wood-Pewee in Grant remained through mid August.  Kitsap’s first Black Phoebe made a brief appearance in mid August.  Six westside Say’s Phoebes were more than are found in a typical fall.  An Ash-throated Flycatcher in late September was the first for Clallam.  A rare westside Canyon Wren was in King in August.  The state’s 15th Blue-gray Gnatcatcher was at Neah Bay in late September.  High counts of 69 Hermit and 637 Varied Thrushes were tallied during morning flight in late September at Neah Bay.

Eastern warblers were well represented this season.  Tennessee Warblers included one in Grant and at least three at Neah Bay.  The state’s second Lucy’s Warbler came just ten months after first which was also at Neah Bay.  Chestnut-sided Warblers were found in Walla Walla and KingBlackpoll Warblers were found in Grant and Kitsap, the latter being just the westside’s 4th record.  Westside Northern Waterthrush were found in Clallam and Thurston.

An early American Tree Sparrow was in Skagit in late September.  Brewer’s Sparrows were found in Pierce for the third fall in a row.  Ten migrant Vesper Sparrows at Newhalem was an impressive concentration for the westside.  Westside Lark Sparrows were found in Clallam and Kitsap.  A “Dark-lored” White-crowned Sparrow (oriantha/leucophrys) was Skagit’s first record and one of few from western Washington.  An Indigo Bunting was in Lincoln in late August.  An Orchard Oriole at Neah Bay in late September was the state’s 10th.
